The 4 Best Rock Bands of the 80s

The 1980s was a great decade for rock, and you may even have a number of albums from well-known rock acts lurking around in your record collection. But which were the best rock bands from the 1980s? Here are four of the best that should be present in any rock fan's LP collection.

Guns N' Roses

Formed in 1985 in Hollywood, Guns N' Roses soon went on to take over the world and become one of the most successful rock acts in history. The band was formed when Hollywood Rose and L.A. Guns members combined to form one new band (hence the name), with Axl Rose as the charismatic frontman.

Slash later became the lead guitarist, and since their formation they have sold over 100 million albums and scored hits with such tunes as 'Sweet Child o' Mine'. The band is still going, even though Rose is the only original member remaining.

Metallica

Metallica formed in Los Angeles in 1981 and quickly built up a strong following. The band came into being when James Hetfield (who became the vocalist) answered a classified ad posted by Lars Ulrich looking to form a band, and the rest is history.

It wasn't until the fifth album, known as 'The Black Album', that the band started to appeal more to the mainstream and their popularity really took off. Now they have won a total of nine Grammy Awards and have become the first band to have five albums debut at number one consecutively in the United States.

Iron Maiden

Iron Maiden actually formed in 1975, but they did not experience a great deal of success until the 1980s when their popularity rocketed. They formed in East London with Steve Harris as the main songwriter and bassist, and are still going to this day after selling over 85 million records. Their 1982 album, 'The Number of the Beast', reached platinum status in the United States.

The Cure

The Cure formed in 1976 and their debut album, 'Three Imaginary Boys', was released in 1979. However, it was only in the 1980s that they really became popular and made up part of the post-punk and new wave movements. Their growing popularity started with their 1982 single 'Let's Go to Bed' which appealed to a more commercial market, and by the end of the decade they were one of most popular rock bands in the world. Robert Smith, the frontman and songwriter, is the only remaining member.
